In late April of 2008, researchers in the U.K. announced that an experimental treatment – a type of gene therapy – had been used successfully to restore the eyesight of a patient suffering from Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, a genetic disorder that causes the loss of vision during childhood. While this therapy had formerly been successful in treating dogs with a similar condition, it was the first time it had been used successfully in the treatment of humans.
