when you speak, the vocal chords in your throat vibrate. these vibrations change the air pressure in your mouth and the pressure changes produce sound waves. when you throw a stone into a water, little waves radiate from the point where the stone entered. sound waves act in the same way: they get smaller as they get further away from their starting point. a big stone makes big waves in the water, a loud noise makes big sounds waves in the air.
